Making new friends, high school....

Finding the right ones - the tips and tricks!

What does a friend look like?

We're lucky - we can see people and find common links. Have you ever noticed how often men and women choose someone that looks like them in some way, either as friends or as partners?

Ok, here's a test. Look at the photo below and choose which one of these girls is your new best friend?

How'd you go? I bet she was wearing a white uniform and pom poms on her feet!

What makes a good friend?

There are some basic elements that are really obvious. They may make you smile or laugh or they may live near you.

What about if they are brilliant at Math or want to travel the world, just like you? How do you find out who they are to make friends quickly? What if they play football or go-kart on weekends and you totally love these sports? They could be trying to find you too.

The real key is sharing information.

The real danger is sharing the wrong information.

And yet you want to be liked. So how do you share a little bit without too much? The power is observation. Look, listen and watch. Work out who will make you laugh AND take you to detention too. Work out who lives near you BUT is a bully.

Once you've worked out who, then work out how. Simple, cool, low key introductions can be a good start. You've got room to move if you decide they could be a friend, just not THE best friend.

In a school full of students, there will always be someone that will make your experience a positive one. The first step is realising that you set yourself up on day one. Do it right and enjoy the experience. You never know, they might take you travelling with them!
